6 Days Climbing Kilimanjaro via Umbwe Route Overview
The Umbwe Route is Kilimanjaro’s most challenging and direct path, offering steep ascents, dramatic scenery, and a rewarding summit experience. Over six days, climbers tackle rugged landscapes, enjoy stunning vistas, and experience one of the fastest, yet physically demanding, routes to Uhuru Peak.
Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival & Transfer to Umbwe Gate
Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transfer to Umbwe Gate. Begin trekking through lush rainforest toward Umbwe Cave Camp. Overnight in tents with dinner, acclimatizing for the demanding days ahead.
Day 2: Umbwe Cave Camp to Barranco Camp
Trek steeply out of the rainforest, crossing moorland and alpine terrain. Reach Barranco Camp, located beneath the iconic Barranco Wall. Afternoon spent resting and enjoying panoramic mountain views.
Day 3: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Ascend the Barranco Wall before trekking across valleys and ridges to Karanga Camp. This shorter day helps with acclimatization, preparing for the summit attempt.
Day 4: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Continue to Barafu Camp, the base for the summit push. Rest, hydrate, and prepare for the midnight climb to the highest point of Africa.
Day 5: Summit Day – Uhuru Peak & Descent to Mweka Camp
Start the pre-dawn ascent to Stella Point and onward to Uhuru Peak. After enjoying sunrise and summit celebrations, descend to Mweka Camp for overnight rest.
Day 6: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate & Departure
Complete the final descent through rainforest to Mweka Gate. Receive your summit certificate and transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport or nearby lodge for onward travel.
